Turning Your Small Closet into Your Dream Closet
Stocking your closet with accessories that make the most of your available space can be a key move in getting your small closet organized. There are all kinds of closet organization systems on the market today. The problem with most is that their options are limited according to the amount of space that you have. If you have a small closet it may seem like an organization system is out of your reach.
Large deep shelves are perfect for storing bulky or multiple items. Many find it effective to leave shelves deep and use a variety of storage bins, buckets or containers to store household items, rather than building an elaborate network of smaller shelves. This leaves you room to grow into the space and create space where you did not think you had it before.
You may wonder how installing a closet system of shelving will fit into a smaller closet. The answer here is hangers and design. By stocking your closet with a variety of hanger types, you can increase the space by up to fifty percent. Shirt hangers, skirt hangers, pants hangers, dress hangers and cascading hangers will all help you make the most of your hanging space.
Hanger accessories, such as cascading hooks, will allow you to hang pants and skirts with the shirt or jacket that you intend them to go with. Coordinating outfits in this way will help you create space where you did not have it before. Plus, you will be able to quickly grab your clothing in the morning without having to sift through tightly packed clothes. This will save you valuable time.
Design for creating space in a very small closet is very important. Install shelving either above, below or beside your hanging bar. For example, you can build deep shelves down one side of the closet with a divider in the center. Place two short hanging bars on the opposite side. Make sure that the top bar is about as high as you can reach so that clothing, like pants, do not drag the floor on the lower bar.
Let us say that you have a six foot wide closet with a bar all the way across. You can build shelves on one side, place two three foot bars on the opposite side. You will still have six feet of hanging bar space, but now you have additional shelving to stack t-shirts, shorts, pajamas or whatever you need to store.
For children’s closets, you may be able to move the hanging bar down closer to their height and add shelves above the bar. These can be used to store puzzles and games or other items that you child may need. Another option is to leave the bar high and build a large shelf below the bar. Children’s clothing does not hang down very far, so leaving the space below them empty is a waste of space.
