Would changing to a better quality dog food make them poo more?
We have a 17-week-old golden retriever. Our vet recommended we give him Purina Pro Plan dog food. That's what he'd been eating from about eight weeks until... less than a week ago. I was reading and saw that Pro Plan has a bunch of crap and fillers in it.
Well, Mojo would poo once every... 12 hours or so. He's even gone LONGER before. We asked the vet, she wasn't worried... His poo was always normal looking.
Well, we switched him (progressively) to Canidae, because I read it was a pretty good dog food.
He's been eating only Canidae for the past few days now, and we notice he poos much more frequently!
Could this be because the food is better?
Oh man, now I'm worried...
We did it gradually, but... I mean, I'm sure we could've done it even more gradually. We have been feeding him the same amount, but I will definitely cut back.
We are feeding him the puppy version of the large breed.
If he keeps this up should we call the vet?
One poop a day is NOT enough for a puppy, he should have been going at least a minimum of about 3-4 times a day eating purina pro plan and any dog food for that fact. He should be eating three times a day and therefore he should poop 3 times a day, first thing in the morning, then sometime after breakfast, then again after lunch and possibly one time after dinner before bed and even could have one during the nightly trip outside.
The reason they poop so much is because they cannot digest fillers therefore they have no choice but to eliminate them hence a lot of poops. By switching to a grain free food or a higher quality food, they should actually poop LESS. My dog, who is four, only goes twice a day and sometimes only once a day, but that's when she's on a bland diet due to her stomach. I feed Taste of the Wild, my dog did not do well on Canidae, she kept getting diarrhea so I changed over to TOTW and she's been doing great on that.
So to answer your question, no, a dog on a higher quality food should actually poop less not more. As a puppy he should poop frequently, the only poop once a day is a concern.
Now I believe that it's not the quality of food it's how well your dog does on it, just because it's good doesn't make it better. if your dog doesn't do well on it then it's not a good food for your dog. It might take you several switches before you find a food that works well with your dog as he gets older.
Good luck
