Vital Tips for the Prevention of Black Mold
The fungus known as 'black mold' is an asexually reproducing organism that emits poisonous reproductive spores into the air. These microscopic 'eggs' can be inhaled by animals and human beings moving around that vicinity. In all cases, breathing in the spores will cause irritations in the mucus linings of the nose, the throat, the eyes and the lungs. The condition may become morbid if enough of the spores have been taken in, and taken in repeatedly. Specifically, internal and fatal bleeding in the lungs has been documented in a number of babies and pets.
While it may be virtually impossible to prevent the microscopic spores from getting wafted into your house by the wind, you are still in a position to implement certain measures to discourage black mold colonies from growing in one spot and proliferating to other locations in your house.
Check for the humidity level in your area
In the battle against black mold you should always be armed with sword and shield to ensure your status as owner of the house. Otherwise, the various kinds of mold (not only black mold), may wrest control from your hands, requiring you to follow up the damage that they do most of the time, instead of devoting time to home improvements. You will need a good hygrometer and an efficient dehumidifier after your house is built or when you move in to an old structure that you bought or rented. Hygrometers indicate the humidity in the location and dehumidifiers decrease that humidity if necessary. Optionally, you may want to have air moisturizers on stand by in case you have made the air in your home too dry.
Black mold spores may land in structures in your house. However, it is not always that these spores will activate and form colonies there. If they, for instance, find themselves in a place that is excessively dry and without a spot of moisture, they will simply form protective coats and hibernate in the location until conditions are favorable for their colonies to grow. Specifically the environment has to have a humidity of 55 % or higher for the spores to activate. the humidity in your home should therefore be upwards of 30 % but not higher than 50 %.
Clean up wet areas and follow up with fans to ventilate and dry up those places
The importance of maintaining blowing fans in your kitchen, your bathroom and in your washing area cannot be over-rated. Every after each time that you use these places in your house, you have to wipe clean any liquids that have been spilled on the tables or on the floor. Avoid spilling liquids on the walls adjoining your kitchen, bathroom and laundry appliances. Otherwise, you should also take the time to wipe those walls dry afterwards. Since sinks and bathtubs are usually fixed in their place, you should have blowing fans that can be so directed as to dry the walls behind these washing areas. Along this line, open the windows of washing rooms after you use these rooms.
Check for leaks in the water piping system periodically
It will do you a lot of good to inspect the water pipes every so often for leaks. These can cause moisture to be retained on floors and be reason enough for black molds to proliferate under your flooring and in your ceiling. If you detect signs of water damage on your ceiling, do not waste time to have that portion of the ceiling opened and cleaned. Then dehumidify the room or use the blowing fan to dry up the ceiling before sealing it up again. In case the ceiling boards are excessively infiltrated with black molds, your best option will be to replace them. Make sure you dispose of the old boards properly. Treat them with mold-killing chemicals before burning them, being careful to use filtered masks, goggles and appropriate clothing in the process.
