is there some type of conditioner we can use to unstick a valve?
v-8 350 in a 72 chevy that has sat for 6 years without running started popping at first out the right side of the tailpipe (duals) then stopped but didnt start doing it again until we put more gas in it sometimes when you try to open open up the 4 barrel she backfires thru the carb and when we pulled the pump out of the tank before we drove it . the line was packed full of black stuff we had to use a coathanger and carb cleaner to loosen it over night then put a new fuel filter on it now that fuel filter has got rust and carbon packed it could this be the problem? we even took off the fuel filter and changed the points dist to a hei dist and now she wont start please someone that is a certified mechanic respond we need yr help
You very well could have a stuck valve on this but that should not keep it from starting. Does it even try to Kick Over? There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with a points distributor as long as it is in tune. My first hunch is that the Module in your HEI distributor is bad. It ran...U changed distributor and it no longer runs.
Hey....wait a minute... Check your Voltage to your HEI set up... Remember that these older chevys used a Ballast Resistance Wire to feed the points distributor 9-10V instead of 12V that your HEI wants. That could cause your HEI to not fire if you hooked up the balast wire to power it.
Also, this is a reminder why we need to use a Fuel Stabilizer in anything that is going to sit for a while! Especially small engines.
If you have that much gunk/goo in your system, I would drop the tank and get it cleaned out.. Just replace the lines with new. Most likely the old ones are rusty anyway. Also, the carb will need taken off and taken apart to clean the goo out of it.
If you want to see if it will actually run still... you can always grab the Propane soldering torch set and carefully shoot a little Propane Vapor down the carb while cranking the engine over... Because LPgas burns as a vapor only in an engine this could help diagnose what is wrong.
What would I do first?
1) Check Voltage to the HEI and verify that you have spark!
2) If suspect, just drop the old distributor back in to test fire the engine
3) Clean tank/replace lines/ clean carbeurator
Dont get frustrated...just go through the basics... It is Air, Fuel, and spark. If it does not run... one of these ingredients is missing completely or arriving at the wrong time!
As to your question of freeing the valve. once you get it running, run some Motor Flush through it for 5 minutes as directed...or add a pint of Diesel fuel to the oil. Then run it at idle for 5 minutes and change it. You might have to do this a few times untill the oil still is clean after a few minutes of run time.
Also, remember that this vehicle might have been parked with carboned up valves...and half worn out engine! These were good old engines... but they were really only good for about 100,000 miles between overhauls!
