has anyone ever used air cooled vw parts to make an 8 cylinder motor?

I would like to know if anyone ever created a motor case that utilized vw air cooled parts in a flat 8 cylinder configuration.

i have seen a few pictures of 1500's or 1600's mated together at the crankshaft to make a 3L or a 3.2L flat 8
